Do you think it is tacky to throw your own engagement party at 18?

I recently got engaged to my boyfriend of four years. My mum want to help me plan an engagement party but I’m not sure if it is tacky to throw it yourself. I know it is tacky to throw your own bridal shower and baby shower but I’m not sure about engagement parties. We aren’t planning on getting married until I finish university which will be the summer of 2014 unless I take a year abroad and then it might be a year or two after I finish. I know 18 is young to get engaged but we haven’t rushed into this engagement and we aren’t rushing to get married either.

Yes I think it’s a little tacky. I don’t think it’s okay to throw any sort of party for yourself. If your mum wants to throw it for you then that’s different.

I don’t think it’s tacky, but I think you should wait to have a party because 2014 is a long way away so you have plenty of time to throw a party. I would just have a nice meal with my family and his family and close friends then you don’t have to go through all the stress of a party and cost.

Congrats and good luck

It sounds like your mom is helping, just put her name on the invitations as the hostess and you don’t have to worry. There’s nothing wrong with helping her so it goes the way you envisioned it

I think they’re tacky in general. And an unnecessary waste of money.
